Co-op Charting on the Cooper River
and Memorial Day on Charleston Harbor
Jon May coordinated a great cruise to Charleston for Memorial
Day weekend, while Norman Agnew planned a meticulous cooperative charting
adventure for cruise participants on the Cooper River. Both were first-timers at
their respective jobs and are to be congratulated on their success!
It was a long weekend of fun filled with a little bit of
everything for everyone. We checked our assigned section of the Cooper River for
NOAA, enjoyed lunch on the Cooper River and made it back to Patriot's Point
ahead of the storm. We had 11 boats along for the Thursday to Monday cruise, and
by my count we ranged from 23 to 30 passengers during the weekend. And to beat
the gas prices, we boarded the crowd onto three boats Saturday for a luncheon
outing to Shem Creek. While the weather was threatening all weekend, it turned
out to be perfect temperatures with the wind and current testing our boating
skills more than we would have perhaps liked.
As you click through the photos from our trip, be sure to note the bad
boating practices that we captured: running with a wake in a no-wake area, a
passenger riding with their legs dangling over the boat's bow trying to touch
the water (no life jacket, of course) and the sport fisherman party boat
carrying its passengers and those from the three boats it towed on the stern
(now, tell me that boat had enough life jackets aboard!). You can see that we
ate well, as usual, enjoyed the scenery and swapping stories while sitting
around on the dock! By the way, the cruise ship leaving out is the one that a
few hours later would rescue the South Carolina guys whose boat sank.
