
Numerous Awards Presented During D/26 Spring Conference
Squadron members from throughout District 26 enjoyed a beautiful weekend on
the coast when Hilton Head Sail and Power Squadron hosted the Spring Conference
12-13 March at the Holiday Inn Oceanfront.

Approximately 120 members attended the weekend event, which is the time when
good works are recognized through awards presented to squadrons and individuals
for achievements during the previous Watch Year. The winners are selected by the
District Commander upon the recommendation of various district bridge officers
and district committee chairs. All winners, past and present, and the criteria
for each award are listed on the D/26 website under the awards link.
For 2010, the following awards were presented:
The Richard E. Rettew Cooperative Charting Award went to Golden Corner Lakes
Sail and Power Squadron and its Cooperative Charting Chairman, Lt. Temple Meek,
JN. This is the fifth consecutive year for Golden Corner to take home the award.
This squadron pursues cooperative charting with great vigor and integrates this
activity on practically every squadron gathering.
The Robert A. Peters Boating Activities Award went to Lake Murray Power Squadron
in Division I; North Strand Sail and Power Squadron, Division II; and Golden
Corner Lakes Sail and Power Squadron, Division III. Each of these squadrons had
the highest percentage of boats and members participating in boating activities
relative to their total membership.
The District 26 Membership Award went to Tybee Light Sail and Power Squadron for
achieving the highest rate of membership growth in the district. This squadron's
growth also was among the highest in the United States Power Squadrons. Tybee
also received the Doing It Right (DIR) Award from the USPS Membership Committee.
Three Educational Department awards were presented: The Wolf-Ewing Educational
Achievement Award went to Golden Isles Sail and Power Squadron for achieving the
highest percentage of member course completions and the Prince Henry the
Navigator award was won by Golden Corner Lakes Sail and Power Squadron for the
best completion rate in Advanced Grade courses. The Carol A. McVey Award for
Educational Leadership recognizes the Squadron Educational Officer who has shown
exceptional leadership in USPS education. Lt/C John Meyenberg, AP, of Charleston
Sail and Power Squadron is this year's recipient.
The District 26 Sparkplug Award recognizing a new member for exceptional
contributions to USPS went to Lt/C Linda Mahoney, S, of Golden Isles Sail and
Power Squadron.
Two
squadron commanders are recognized annually for their overall achievements and
contributions to District 26. The Ed Fetner Award went to Cdr Larry Jefferis,
AP, of Golden Isles Sail and Power Squadron. The Commander of the Year Award was
presented to P/C Andy Hyman, SN, of Lake Murray Power Squadron.
The District 26 Safety Award will be presented to Golden Corner Sail and Power
Squadron at one of its regular meetings.
R/C Howard Yoas, SN, concluded his official duties at Saturday evening’s banquet
by presenting Life Member Awards to John Sikes of Charleston, Horst Boettge of
Golden Corner Lakes, Edwin Hood of Hilton Head, Bill Mullin of Long Bay and
Frank Clayton of Thurmond Lake.
In addition to these awards, District 26 and each of its 13 squadrons were
presented the USPS Distinguished Communicator Award for Publications at the
Spring Conference. District 26 and the following squadrons received the USPS
Distinguished Communicator Award for Websites: Beaufort, Charleston, Golden
Corner Lakes, Golden Isles, Hilton Head, Lake Hartwell, Lake Murray, Long Bay,
North Strand, Savannah River and Tybee Light.
The District was recognized for 100 percent of its squadrons participating in
the USPS Educational Fund. District 26 also received a second place award from
USPS for Operations Training, which was presented to D/26 Operations Training
Chairman Lew Ward, SN.
Other awards presented during the Spring Conference:
Educational Achievement recognitions went to Audie Holmes, Paulette
Harris-Holmes, Bill Burn and Robert Galbraith, while Steven Nall, James Grimshaw,
Jon May, Paul Krohne and James Spencer were recognized for achieving Educational
Proficiency.
Eight squadron members were
recognized for completion of the District's Leadership Development Program. They
were: Elise Jorgens and Don Todd of Charleston, Jim Wilkins of Lake Hartwell,
Stan Godfrey of Lake Murray, Roger and Florence Clark of North Strand, Butch
Rachal of Savannah River and John Ward of Tybee Light.
