Beware "Great News! Pay Less" Renewal Notice
by Lt/C Lee Ayers, AP
At least three Lake Murray members have received recent renewal
invoices announcing “GREAT NEWS! Pay less.” Be careful in making your renewal
decisions and read carefully.
The 70 percent reduction in price is for Unlimited Freshwater
Towing. The key word is “Freshwater.” This is a new category, and not the
unlimited towing that many of you have carried in the past and made very
worthwhile use of when boating in coastal waters.
Two of the three Lake Murray members have called BoatU.S. for an
explanation. Both received the same information. Our zip code is more than 50
miles inland from saltwater, so BoatU.S. offered freshwater towing. Well, if you
are like me, I carry unlimited for when I trailer to the coast; not so much for
my boating on good ol’ Lake Murray.
Both of us were advised that to have unlimited towing on
saltwater we must carry, you guessed it, saltwater coverage. This can be
accomplished by either calling BoatU.S. or by doing your renewal online.
Renewing online also will save you some money. Right now BoatU.S. regular annual
basic dues are $25 with a web discount to $19. Also, remember to indicate that
you are a USPS member and enter your Certificate Number to get about $19 or so
additional discount depending on the coverage(s) you select. The saltwater
unlimited should show at something a few dollars less than $116 above the annual
dues with the USPS discount.
If you have problems, please call BoatU.S. They have been very
helpful to those of us who have called.
Don’t get caught on the coast with inland coverage thinking that you have the
same unlimited to which you have been accustomed.
