Lake Murray Brings Home Awards
Lt/C Andy Hyman, SN, was presented the Carol McVey Educational
Leadership Award during the District 26 annual awards banquet on 21 March. Andy
was cited for his achievements as Lake Murray’s educational officer during 2008.
“If Andy wasn't getting members to take courses, he was taking
courses himself,” said D/Lt/C Eric Pearson, SN, in presenting the award, noting
that Andy earned his Full Certificate as of February 2009.
The Carol McVey Educational Leadership Award is presented by District 26 to the
squadron educational officer who has shown outstanding leadership in USPS
education. Award criteria include best squadron record of educational courses
passed in ratio to squadron membership; best advancement of squadron in
composite educational achievement per the requirements of the District
Educational Trophy; attendance at District Council and Conference meetings;
promptness in handling reports and correspondence; and, participation in
projects to promote USPS Educational Programs.
Lake Murray Power Squadron also won the Robert A. Peters Boating Activities
Award for the 12th time in the 17-year history of the award. Congratulations to
2008 Boating Activities Committee Chair and current LMPS Treasurer Bryant
Blakeslee and to all of our squadron members who participated in last year’s
cruises.
Our squadron made quite the impression with 17 members in attendance at the
District 26 Spring Conference, which was hosted by Swamp Fox Power Squadron
20-22 March in Florence.
In addition to the awards noted above, our newsletter, The Log
Jam, was awarded the Distinction in Journalism Award for 2008 “in recognition of
distinctive performance in the practice of USPS Journalism.” Congratulations to
our 2008 editor, Lt Janice Ayers, P, for this achievement.
Our Squadron website received the 2008 Website Award for Excellence “for
outstanding website design, information, ease of use, content and the
dissemination of the spirit of the United States Power Squadrons.”
Congratulations to our webmaster, P/C Debra Allen, P, for this achievement.
Our Squadron also was awarded the USPS Educational Fund Certificate of Merit “in
appreciation of the extraordinary contribution for the furtherance of education
in the fields of navigation and small boat handling.” We have been on this honor
roll of 100 percent participation for 26 years.

from the District 26 Spring Conference. You'll see folks from other squadrons,
Andy's Mom, who joined us for dinner. Halfway through the photos, you will find
a strange angle on a photo taken inside the stuck elevator. You can only see
five of the 12 of us who thought we were going to miss the party!
