Lake Murray Brings Home Awards
The District 26 Spring Conference was hosted by Golden Corner
Lakes Sail and Power Squadron on 28-30 March in Anderson. Lake Murray took 17
members to the meeting and brought home numerous awards for activities in 2007.
Our newsletter, The Log Jam, was awarded the Distinction
in Journalism Award for 2007 “in recognition of distinctive performance in the
practice of USPS Journalism.” Congratulations to our editor, Lt Janice Ayers, P,
for this achievement.
The District newsletter, 026° True, also received the Distinction in
Journalism Award. Congratulations to our own Barbara Pearson, AP, who served as
editor until November 2007.
Our Squadron website received the 2007 Website Award for Excellence “for
outstanding website design, information, ease of use, content and the
dissemination of the spirit of the United States Power Squadrons.”
Congratulations to our webmaster, P/C Debra Allen, P, for this achievement.
Our Squadron also was awarded the USPS Educational Fund Certificate of Merit “in
appreciation of the extraordinary contribution for the furtherance of education
in the fields of navigation and small boat handling.” We have been on this honor
roll of 100% participation for 26 years.
Lake Murray received the “USPS Environmental Committee Cleanup Recognition Award
– Boats Required” for our effort to clean up Rock Island on Lake Murray last
year. Lake Murray was the only squadron in District 26 to receive this award.
Thanks to Lt Paul Bergstrand, AP and Lt Pam Bergstrand, AP for organizing the
clean-up and to all who helped out.
Congratulations to Lt Charlie Bruce, AP, for achieving Educational Proficiency.
This recognizes a member for completing three Advanced Grade and three Elective
courses.
Congratulations to P/R/C Jack Wilson, AP for achieving Life Member status by
earning his 25th Merit Mark.
Two members of Lake Murray Squadron were awarded “Power of 10” pins (that’s
right “10”) for recruiting new members. Congratulations and thanks to P/D/C
Archie Trawick, SN, and Lt/C Andy Hyman, AP.
Lt/C Andy Hyman, AP, also was awarded the D/26 Spark Plug Award.
Congratulations, Andy! Recipients of the D/26 Spark Plug Award are nominated by
the squadrons and selected by the district commander. Nominees are new members
(less than two years) who have contributed the most in time and effort to USPS.
Our 2007 “Get Up Now” commander, P/C Mike Kirk, AP, was awarded the Ed Fetner
Award. This award was donated to the district by P/D/C Edward H. Fetner, Jr., N,
(one of Lake Murray’s own past commanders) because there always seems to be at
least one more squadron commander who displays the same qualifications as the
Commander of the Year. Congratulations, Mike, on this outstanding achievement!
And last but not least (drum roll, please) … The Robert A. Peters Boating
Activities Award is back at Lake Murray! Our squadron received this award for
the 11th time in the 16 years that it has been in existence.
Congratulations, P/C Tony Dodson, AP, our 2007 Boating Activities Chair! And a
huge thank you to all the cruise coordinators and everyone who participated in
the more than 20 boating activities last year. We couldn’t have done it without
YOU! 2007 was indeed an outstanding year.
