America's Boating Course will be offered as two
half-day sessions on 24 February and 3 March at Flotilla Island on Lake Murray.
Flotilla Island is located at the end of Johnson Marina Road, between
Ballentine and Chapin, S.C.
Materials for the class are $40. Cost is $50 per couple if you share
Onsite registration will be held from 8:30-9 a.m. on
Saturday 24 February.
You also may register online. The class will be taught from 9 a.m. until
1 p.m. each Saturday and a review will be held prior to the exam, which will
take place at 1 p.m. on 3 March.
The course is open to the public and covers all types
of boats and boating on inland and coastal waters. The instructional
material is produced by the United States Power Squadrons® and is
presented by members of Lake Murray Power Squadron.
America's Boating Course provides students with all the
information required by federal and state boating laws and regulations.
Completion of the course meets educational requirements for boat operation
in all states and qualifies youths under age 16 to operate watercraft of
more than 15 horsepower without adult supervision. Course graduates also may
qualify for discounts on boat insurance.
Topics covered include types of boats, required safety
equipment, Navigational Rules of the Road, aids to navigation, boat
registration, safety procedures, finding your way, electronic navigation,
anchoring, adverse conditions, communications afloat, and knots and lines.
