The course will be offered in two Saturday sessions from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. each on March 16 and 23 and again on May 4 and 11. It will be held at Flotilla Island on Lake Murray, which is located at the end of Johnson Marina Road between Ballentine and Chapin. The address is 2390 Johnson Marina Road, Chapin, S.C.

If space allows, onsite registration will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. on March 16 and May 4. And for those who have additional questions before registering, please email our local Educational Officer Mike Zafoot.

The course is open to the public and covers all types of boats and boating on inland and coastal waters. The instructional material is produced by the United States Power Squadrons® and is presented by members of America's Boating Club of Lake Murray who are certified instructors meeting the requirements of the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators.

America's Boating Course provides students with all the information required by federal and state boating laws and regulations. Completion of the course meets educational requirements for boat operation in all states, including South Carolina’s new regulation requiring those born on or after July 1, 2007, to pass a boating safety course before operating a boat with a 10-horsepower engine or above.

Successful completion of the course also may qualify a boater for a discount on boating insurance.

Topics covered include types of boats, required safety equipment, Navigational Rules of the Road, aids to navigation, boat registration, safety procedures, finding your way, electronic navigation, anchoring, adverse conditions, communications afloat, and knots and lines. For details, click here.
